Twenty-five years old, yay! Matured a bit at work, but still kiddish otherwise. Year #25 was filled with lots of ups, and one downhill slump. Everything best described in the following twenty-five phrases.

Before going ahead with the interesting experience, here's wishingvandyvandana a very happy birthday! Rock on, girl!
Onto the story. On the 7th of May this year, I received a message in my Flickr inbox from a guy in Austria named Dieter (airlinespoons on Flickr), asking me to collect spoons (of the cutlery kind) from Kingfisher Airlines, and send it to his place in Austria. In return, he would send me Austrian chocolate.
First thought of it as a prank being played by fellow LJers in office, but upon checking the photostream, I was taken aback by the collection. His collection comprised of 700 spoons then, and has now grown to 802!
Decided to be game and add to his collection. Asked him to send me a Red Bull sticker or two along with chocolates.
premshree submitted a post about Dieter's collection to BoingBoing on the same day.
On May 29th, while I was flying from Hyderabad-Bangalore, I asked one of the air-hostesses aboard if I could keep the teaspoon and tablespoon from the shiny steel cutlery. She refused, and upon telling her about the aforementioned collection (I'm sure she thought I was a dope), she asked me to talk to her manager, who happened to be the other air-hostess. Thankfully, Ms. Poonam was kind enough to let me take the two pieces of cutlery. Phase one of mission, complete.
Phase two - Send the stuff to Austria! Enquired with half-a-dozen courier services, and each of them quoted prices in the INR 700-900 range. At the Indiranagar Post Office (100 ft Road) here, the lady quoted about INR 400-something for sending a parcel to Austria via registered post. Business had closed on the day I enquired, so it had to be another day.
One fine morning (believe me, it's tough to wake up and get work done in the morning) in June, I land up at the above-mentioned PO, with the spoons all wrapped up in plastic and enclosed in a cloth envelope. The lady behind the counter registers the packet to be mailed, and asks me for INR 56! Apparently, the INR 400+ quoted earlier was for speed post. Good ol' Indian Postal System ruleth! Mission: Accomplished.
The spoons reached in about 2 weeks, I guess. See the tablespoon and teaspoon in all their prettiness. :)
On Wednesday (day before yesterday), I received a blue-coloured envelope from Austria, containing three bars of chocolate, a Red Bull sticker, an Airbus A321 sticker and a Republic of Lauda Air sticker. The Red Bull sticker is large!
For some reason, I felt quite happy contributing to this amazing collection. Dieter's dedication and passion is definitely to be admired. (He's written to airlines asking them for cutlery, and has visited flea markets too! He's been collecting for six years, he tells me.) It sort of reminds me of my own passion for weird stuff like adidas t-shirts, and that of collecting computer viruses from standard VIII - X in school.
How about adding to the collection? I'm surely sending more spoons via snail-mail in exchange for more Austrian chocolate!
